Balthazar took a sabbatical in 2017, leading three members to release solo records: Bassist Simon Casier as Zimmerman, frontman Maarten Devoldere as Warhaus and the other frontman Jinte Deprez as J. Bernardt. The latter abandoned the mothership’s trusty indie rock and ended up at a fascinating intersection of gospel, hip hop, Kraftwerk and R&B, together with whizz kid Adriaan Van De Velde (A.K.A. Pomrad) and master drummer Klaas De Somer (Brihang, Eefje de Visser, Tourist LeMc). According to Deprez, J. Bernardt sounds like a melting pot of The Doors, Edith Piaf and Daft Punk. The album ‘Running Days’ (2017) is melodic and danceable and has spread to every corner of Europe. In 2024, history repeated itself: Balthazar took another break, and J. Bernardt re-emerged…
