dEUS is our national musical heritage. This year, the Antwerp band celebrates the 30th anniversary of its debut ‘Worst Case Scenario’ (1994), probably the most influential Belgian rock album of all time. There is a clear distinction between pre- and post-‘Suds & Soda’ and ‘Hotellounge (Be the Death of Me)’. What came after is a stunning trajectory of life, survival and reinvention. They have a beautiful way of straddling capriciousness and hushed beauty. The distance between ‘The Architect’ and ‘Nothing Really Ends’ is vast yet understandable. Each album – there have been eight altogether – adds a couple of new classics to the long list, such as ‘1989’ and ‘Love Breaks Down’ on their latest, ‘How to Replace It’ (2023). Live, too, they are nothing short of godlike. Their return to Rock Werchter is long overdue!
