As students, Tony Esposito and Nick Wilkerson from Louisville, Kentucky saw a Grim Reaper mannequin hanging up in a local costume shop. This scary figure inspired the name of the punk band that the pair was just starting. Things got going when the album ‘The World’s Best American Band’ (2017) got them invited to South By Southwest: the major music convention that takes place every year in Austin, Texas. White Reaper was asked to open for Billy Idol and Weezer on tour, and won a contract with a major record label. The five went into the studio with producer Jay Joyce (Cage The Elephant, The Wallflowers). He moulded the garage punk of ‘Deserve Love’ (2019) into radio-friendly power pop with flashes of seventies glam rock.
