It takes a bit of an effort to get the rest of the world listening to you from Australia. But it has worked out for James Gabriel Keogh, alias Vance Joy, from Melbourne with a simple ukulele and a declaration of love to a Michelle Pfeiffer lookalike. ‘Riptide’ was one of the big hits of 2013. At home in Australia he broke records. No single record has been in the hit lists for longer. The young singer-songwriter got to join Taylor Swift’s 1989 World Tour. She made a piano version of ‘Riptide’ which in turn went viral. And that was only Vance Joy’s second single. ‘Dream Your Life Away’ (2014) and ‘Nation of Two’ (2018) back up the good first impression he made. Both albums are great examples of what he’s so good at: telling lively stories with beautiful metaphors and strong images.
