The War On Drugs made the seemingly impossible possible in 2014. On ‘Lost In The Dream’, the American band sounded like a fusion of Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, Chris Rea and Bruce Springsteen. This is the record on which their leader Adam Granduciel harnessed the chaos in his head and the sadness in his heart and created beauty from them. This modern classic was recorded over two years, most songs were reworked countless times and a lot of musicians joined in. Only then was it right. Granduciel continues to distil and strip his music down. The result is always comfortingly old-fashioned and intriguingly new. As a result, both ‘A Deeper Understanding’ and ‘I Don’t Live Here Anymore’ have been among the best records of 2017 and 2021 respectively.
