SYML is Welsh for ‘simple’. This might seem a strange name for an artist living and working in Seattle, USA, but there is a good reason. Later in life, the adopted Brian Fennell found out that his biological parents lived in Wales. This heritage – and the accompanying confusion – have become the central theme of his work. Fennell has for years been the frontman of Barcelona, an indie band that is compared with Coldplay and Death Cab For Cutie. As SYML, he creates folky songs on piano and acoustic guitar that bear resemblances to Ben Howard and Bon Iver. Live, he embellishes them with dark electronics. ‘Where’s My Love’ (2017) was his first major success. The romantic ballad went gold in Canada and Belgium and has now had 200 million streams. The master plucker of heartstrings.
