British humour, American sound. The Sports Team sound is reminiscent of the Californian group Pavement, an indie rock icon from the 90s. But the lyrics ooze the sarcastic tomfoolery on which the English hold the patent. The six met at Cambridge University, then moved to London. At one of their first concerts they came into contact with Dave McCracken, producer of the solo albums of Ian Brown (The Stone Roses) and of ‘Vantage point’ by dEUS. He brought Sports Team to the starting line, where the group connected with other interesting innovators like IDLES and Shame. A sold-out concert in the Scala in London in September 2018 put the group on the map. Shortly afterwards, singer Alex Rice was proclaimed the new poster boy by Vogue magazine.
