Ry Cuming, from the coastal Australian town of Angourie, had his musical awakening when he heard Jeff Buckley’s ‘Grace’ (1994). His compositions have the magic of the American who died far too young. Under the name of RY X he makes wistful, dreamy songs that, he says, are influenced by the beauty of nature. The acoustic guitar has a key role; rippling beats and gentle piano notes provide subtle colour. The melancholy ‘Berlin’ introduced him to the wider public in 2013. The song was featured in a commercial for a Japanese TV brand, and became so popular that Sam Smith covered it. RY X is synonymous for a unique live experience, as his album with the classical London Contemporary Orchestra proves.
