At the end of every concert, Ólafur Arnalds always tells a humorous story about his grandmother. How she got him, the drummer in a punk band, to listen to Chopin. This has given the Icelander something of a split musical personality. Today, along with Nils Frahm, he is the flag-bearer for the new classical music. But the little punk rocker also lives on. Arnalds makes techno under the name Kiasmos and his new album ‘re:member’ (2018) has SOHN as guest. His love for popular music can also be seen in the tense, energetic way he performs his classical compositions live. It’s appreciated too. “I love seeing guys in Motörhead t-shirts at my shows”, says Arnalds. In Iceland, classical and pop are on equal footing. He is just as beloved there as Björk and Sigur Rós.
