The music of Michael Kiwanuka is a warm plea for beauty, simplicity and timelessness. The Londoner of Ugandan origin is a wise old man in a young body. He sounds as much 1975 as 2022. The story goes that he discovered his musical soul when he heard ‘Sitting on the Dock of the Bay’ by Otis Redding. He knew what he had to do: make the soul music of today. In his world, old-timers like Curtis Mayfield, Bill Withers and Stevie Wonder are important. Jools Holland embraced him, Adele took him on tour, and Kiwanuka grew and grew. All the more once he got involved with top producer Danger Mouse (Beck, The Black Keys, Gorillaz). Their collaboration, ‘Kiwanuka’, won the 2020 Mercury Prize. This is the annual award for the best album by a British artist.
