Mahalia Burkmar recently became an adult but already feels like a veteran. ‘It's as if I have been doing this my whole life’, says the British R&B singer. Which, to be fair, is the truth. She signed with a major record label at age 13, but wanted to complete grammar school first. Her after-school jobs included a hit with Rudimental (‘We the generation’), being the supporting act for Emeli Sandé and Ed Sheeran, and a TV performance in ‘Later… with Jools Holland’. She also came up with a brand name for her music: psycho-acoustic soul. Psycho because her lyrics make you think. Acoustic because her songs also work with a simple guitar and soul because it’s all she’s ever listened to and all she’s ever been doing to date. Mahalia currently tops the dance charts in Great Britain together with her girlfriends Little Simz and Jorja Smith. She'll undoubtedly continue to do so in the future.
