Måneskin defy all the rules of pop music. An Italian rock band with a Scandinavian name – bassist Victoria has a Danish mother – winning the Eurovision Song Contest and appearing on Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show soon afterwards? It seemed like science fiction. No, it really happened in 2021. The quartet from Rome became the most exciting and talented winners of the greatest song competition on earth since Abba. All this has resulted in a success story that has received an uncommonly wide range of support. Their winning song, ‘Zitti E Buoni’ hit gold and platinum in more than 15 countries. The follow-up, ‘I Wanna Be Your Slave’ charted in half the countries on the planet and made it clear that a) the band are here to stay and b) that the Song Contest has delivered, for the first time in its long history, a winner that can take on the biggest of festival stages. Måneskin (moonshine) is only the fourth Italian name in the lengthy annals of Rock Werchter.
