Leon Bridges knew what he wanted to be when he heard Sam Cooke’s ‘A Change Is Gonna Come’ on the soundtrack of ‘Malcolm X’ (1992), a Spike Lee film. The Texan wanted to be a singer. He explored the history of gospel and soul on YouTube. He examined every detail and brought it up to date. Bridges also dressed in an old-fashioned way and went on the road with an authentic soul revue. His debut ‘Coming Home’ (2015) is 100 per cent vintage and heart-warming. Bridges gradually pushed the door open further. He worked with the hip-hop duo Macklemore & Lewis and the psychedelic rock band Khruangbin. These new horizons made ‘Gold-Diggers Sound’ (2021) a thrilling trip. Otis Redding meets Kendrick Lamar on a sun-drenched summer’s day.
