KennyHoopla is a character in ‘Spongebob Squarepants’. It’s also the artist name of Kenneth La’ron, a young black man from Cleveland who, in contrast to his friends, passed on hip-hop and R&B. He loved the fast rock of The All-American Rejects and My Chemical Romance. Through Instagram he got in touch with Travis Barker, the godfather of American pop-punk. The drummer from the iconic blink-182 invited La’ron to record in his studio in Los Angeles. Within an hour, the incredible ‘Estella’ - with Barker on drums – was down on tape. The rest of the album, ‘Survivor’s Guilt: The Mixtape//’ (2021), was completed in two weeks. The collection has a primal force that connects Green Day and The Offspring with Bloc Party and the darker British new wave bands from the ‘80s. Modern nostalgia.
