The sound of Dry Cleaning is impenetrable, and there have been some interesting attempts at defining it. This may be the best one. ‘The music sounds like being in singer Florence Shaw’s body as she walks down a busy street in South London, and hearing all her thoughts out loud in your head.’ Shaw speaks more than sings, somewhat monotone, jumping from one topic to another. The ideas for her lyrics come from her diaries, advertising blurb and comments on YouTube. The rest of the group walks beside her musically and tries to keep hold of the tight cadence of her sprechgesang. The result is unique and hypotonic. Few albums were received as enthusiastically as ‘New Long Leg’ last year. Think Joy Division, PiL or Siouxsie and the Banshees with Kae Tempest on vocals.
