Oompah with a message. The New York collective Brass Against is a militant brass band with a catalogue of protest songs. “We are angry, we are inspired, we are ready to change,” says founder and guitarist Brad Hammonds. And it’s all thanks to Donald Trump. “The first thought I had when he came to power was ‘We need Rage Against The Machine more than ever’.” So he gave saxophonist Andy Gutauskas a call to try out a brass band version of some Rage songs, just for fun. The result was so good that they added another load of trumpets and trombones. The Brass Against repertoire includes such expected names as Fugees, Jane’s Addiction, Kendrick Lamar and Public Enemy. But also Tool and Led Zeppelin, and of course the master of the protest song: Bob Dylan.
