It's as if soul singer Sam Cooke and primal rocker Neil Young joined the hip-hop collective Wu-Tang Clan. That should give you a rough idea of Black Pumas, a project by an unusual duo from the Texan capital of Austin. Adrian Quesada is a man in his forties who used to play guitar in Grupo Fantasma. This nine-piece outfit won the 2010 Grammy Award for Best Latin Album. Quesada had a few spare instrumentals in his studio that needed a soul voice. Friends recommended Eric Burton, a busker playing in downtown Austin. Bingo! The untitled debut from Black Pumas is as good as flawless. Their psychedelic soul made the pair ‘breakout band of 2019’ in the US. Perfect for anyone who has previously enjoyed the likes of Alabama Shakes, Durand Jones & The Indications or Curtis Harding at Werchter.
