Bartees Strange was born in the UK to a soldier and an opera singer. His father’s job took the lad to Germany, Greenland and the United States. He was drawn to music by hardcore and emo. Strange bought a guitar and taught himself all the finer points of the artist’s profession. From writing songs to recording them in his little home studio. Friends in the UK introduced him to the indie rock of Bloc Party and the dubstep of Burial and Skream. ‘Live Forever’ (2020) is the end result of a truckload of influences. His mother’s opera is even part of the mix. ‘One of the most fascinating and affecting debuts of the year’ said the authoritative website Pitchfork of this font of youth and talent.
