Jillian Rose Banks actually had totally different plans for her life. She graduated as a psychologist in 2012. Music was something she kept to herself for years, until February 2013 when the UK radio presenter Zane Lowe discovered the song ‘Before I Ever Met You’ on a secret page on SoundCloud. He was immediately captivated by her intimate revelations, which seemed to have been lifted directly from her journal. This attention made BANKS long for more. She was nominated for Sound Of 2014, the BBC’s annual talent poll. Sam Smith won but she reached number 3. Her debut was called ‘Goddess’ (2014); an apt title. BANKS brings together the best aspects of her contemporaries, with a little extra. Her music is sexier than Lorde, sultrier than Lykke Li and less polarising than Lana Del Rey. Her own goddesses are Lauryn Hill and Fiona Apple.
