Altın Gün

During a tour of Turkey with Dutch artist Jacco Gardner, Jasper Verhulst spent a fortune in the secondhand record shops of Istanbul. He was looking for – and found – Turkish psychedelic folk from the ‘70s. Sounds that have become extinct. Back home, Verhulst wanted to breathe new life into this heritage. He formed a band with two singer-musicians with Turkish roots and four Dutch accompanists. The name is Altın Gün: Turkish for ‘golden day’. Their second album ‘Gece’ was nominated for a Grammy Award in November 2019. That got them invited to major festivals like Coachella and Fuji Rock. They were supposed to record ‘Yol’ (2021) in an idyllic house in Malibu. Unfortunately, they had to make do with Amsterdam. The enforced isolation of the members of the group led to the use of more synthesizers and drum machines, which has only made their music more danceable.
