The Maccabees

The Maccabees

THURSDAY - THE BARN

Young and British with a well-sounding name, which comes from... The Bible. The Londoners flipped through the Holy Book and just picked a word. Leading British radio maker Steve Lamacq put things in motion for the five atheists in 2006. At that moment in time The Maccabees were housed by Fierce Panda, the minor label that had meant a great deal for Air Traffic, Coldplay and Placebo. The band followed the example of the alternative heroes of the moment: Bloc Party and Franz Ferdinand. Which they were greatly criticised for. With their third and latest album ‘Given To The Wild’ (2012) The Maccabees taught their critics a lesson. It is an ambitious album with a tremendous sound decor. And who were these Maccabees? A Jewish family of priests that ruled Judea until the Romans conquered the country in 63 BC.
