Werchter record holders. In 2006, 2007 and 2008 The Kooks featured three times on the bill. First they played in the Pyramid Marquee, then twice on the main stage. The youngsters from trendy Brighton found the band’s name on the album ‘Hunky Dory’ (1971) by David Bowie. They were inspired by The Kinks, Blur and all punks who got involved in reggae. Like Elvis Costello (‘I Don’t Want To Go To Chelsea’) and The Clash (‘Guns Of Brixton’). “Honest songwriting and funkadelic rhythms.” That is how they were introduced to mainland Europe during Eurosonic in Groningen at the beginning of 2006. Their first singles - ‘Naïve’ and ‘She Moves In Her Own Way’ – already made them major. Their album ‘Inside In/Inside Out’ (2006) set up camp in the British Top 20 for six months. With us they survived 55 weeks in the Ultratop and just missed the Top 100 of all time. After which it went from excellent to even better …
