My Morning Jacket

My Morning Jacket

SATURDAY - THE BARN

The apples of Dave Grohl’s eye. Whoever saw them live, knows why. The somewhat hairy men from Louisville, Kentucky are on the right side of ‘hippie’. Long solos, lots of resonant sounds and focus. My Morning Jacket’s country rock is often frighteningly beautiful. And the Low Countries realised it long before the rest of the world. In 2000 the Dutch VPRO made a wonderful documentary on the occasion of their debut album ‘The Tennessee Fire’. That same year they performed at De Nachten in Antwerp. However, they remained a well kept secret and they did not like it. Which they made perfectly clear on ‘Z’ (2005). After three DIY-albums they hired a producer. They surprisingly went for John Leckie, a top producer (Radiohead, Stone Roses) but their complete opposite. He turned off the sound, cut in the songs and added synthesisers. The fairly extreme make-over did wonders for the band. ‘Z’ was one of the best albums of 2005. The next one, ‘Evil Urges’, fell between the cracks, but ‘Circuital’ (2011) made up for everything and was beautifully balanced. Funk, southern rock, country, psychedelia, half hits and lots of joy while playing.
