Chrissie Hynde is finally back in Werchter. It has been exactly 30 years since she excelled here with The Pretenders. They were next to Iggy Pop and Eurythmics on the billing in 1987. Back then it was also a case of ‘finally’. Hynde passed through Werchter in 1980 as the girlfriend of Ray Davies (The Kinks). The Pretenders had to cancel in 1981 and 1982 due to circumstances beyond their control. To make up for that, she came with UB40 in 1986 and gave organiser Herman Schueremans three memorable kisses to celebrate 10 years of Torhout-Werchter. Just to show that it will be nice to see her again. The Pretenders are riding high in 2017. Hynde dove into the studio with Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys) and reappeared with an excellent new album “Alone”. The Pretenders have everything that a perfect festival group needs: a recognisable sound, a charismatic lead vocalist and a jukebox full of hits. Popular songs like ‘Brass in Pocket’ and ‘Don’t Get Me Wrong’ still sound fresh. In calmer moments they can fall back on evergreens like ‘I Go to Sleep’ and ‘I’ll Stand By You’. Pure pleasure.
