It was the silver lining behind the dark cloud: Nathaniel Rateliff was forced to quit his job as a lorry driver for health reasons. Music was the perfect way to keep himself busy. He learned to play the piano and later, in 2010, cut a folk record that earned him the right to open for Mumford & Sons. But his musicality didn’t truly shine until he discovered rhythm-and-blues and soul. Rateliff is accompanied by a seven-piece band – The Night Sweats – and is known as a live sensation. Jimmy Fallon spotted the band on YouTube and invited them to the Tonight Show in September 2015. “That guy the other night – son of a bitch”, said Paul McCartney the day after. In the week that followed, Rateliff sold more than 20,000 albums. They had to find bigger venues to meet the demand for his current tour. Last year, he left The Barn all of a sweat following his delightful old-time soul revue. More of that, please.
